When is it time to change your logo?

As a small business owner and the original creator of our company logo, this question almost feels like "when is it time to allow your child to go out with their friends?" Like your child, your logo may be something that you hold near and dear to your heart. Signs might be pointing to needing a new, updated look but letting go can be difficult to do.

The word "logo" is short for logotype, meaning an identifying symbol and dates back to the early 1800s. Logos have been around as long as there have been traders and merchants. There are many factors that go into developing a logo, at least for those that have been carefully thought out.

A logo communicates your identity and the mark of a good logo is one that is legible and portrays strong brand recognition. It should be unforgettable as your logo may well be the first object people look at when introduced to your company. Consider it like your DNA - no two companies should have the same identity. Make your logo represent who you are as an organization.

So, when is it time to enhance or redo your logo? For some companies it may be never. I think it depends on each individual company. If your company has changed its mission, its services or you just feel like the logo doesn't accurately portray your company anymore, then it might be time for a new look. But if you feel like your logo is still strong and represents the personality of your company then don't mess with a thing.

For Trio, we have decided to make that leap into a new logo. It's a little scary and I certainly feel like we're taking a risk (like when my daughter goes out with her friends for the first time) but I also trust my judgment and have all the confidence in the world that our design team will not stop until we see "the one." We'll know it when we see it and then we'll be proud to share our new and improved look to the world. Stay tuned... new Trio logo coming soon.
